White Zombie was really something else when they released this album back in the 90's. They got a few songs on the radio back when that sort of this was important, but this album (perhaps due in part to the fact that it was produced beautifully) really made an impact.
It was right around the time of Nirvana, and perhaps Nirvana is part of the reason why the industry was open to bands like White Zombie. Who knows? This music was a bit too hard for mainstream, but to be fair so was "Smells like Teen Spirit" now, wasn't it.
i had a thing for the bass player, long before i was one
Not many people know this, but White Zombie actually was a band before this album. They just hadn't found a way to engage a major audience (again, it might be because of Nirvana.) I honestly don't remember how I first became aware of them. It was probably just a pal who had the CD already.
There is something about WZ's use of various microphone effects, with a sweet groove, combined with audio clips from various films (many of them Japanese anime movies) that really just made them something that the world had never heard before. I hadn't heard anything like them before but it also helped that the mixing on this album was absolutely perfect.
If you were alive in the 90's you knew this band if you followed music, even if you didn't like them. In my mind "Black Sunshine" was the best song on this album (feel free to disagree.) However, they never made a video for that so instead I have decided to feature the song that probably put them on the map..... "Thunder Kiss 65"
this is one of my least favorite songs on the album but this is probably just because it was played the most
White Zombie went on to make a few more albums and Rob Zombie carried on to be a director of movies I have never seen. If you are a fan of those films and want to recommend one to me, please do so.
