First time i heard about Ethereum it was about a year ago i think, when the price was $10. A friend of mine was very excited about it and he invested EUR 10k . Unfortunately he got out before the big rise and didn't make any profits.
I didn't buy any ethereum until the the EOS ICO, so i never actually knew that much about ethereum. I'm writing this post because i assume there may be other people in the same boat with me, and i'd like to share a beginner's tip about gas fees when using metamask plugin.
Being such an ethereum newbie, I didn't know about gas fees, so i just clicked ok and accepted the default gas fee offered by metamask. I know it's silly but only when i had to do a second transaction with ethereum, i've noticed that i can chose to pay less gas.
Above you can see the initial "offer" given by metamask 21 GWEI which translates to 0.001163 ETH ($0.31). You can chose to pay a lower fee buy just clicking on the small arrow pointing down and the result is this.
By lowering the number of GWEI to 2(you can't go lower) i only paid $0.03 for this transaction - 10 times less! I think metamask is being deceptive on purpose because those small arrows appear only if you hover over that area, so a lot of newbies will just go with the default fee not knowing that they can pay 10 times less.
