The Fenix mine in Guatemala is an enormous nickel mine in Central America. Indigenous Guatemalans have been shot, raped, and had their land and homes burned in efforts to intimidate them and get them off land. The abuses are an example of the worldwide plague of multinationals using local subsidiaries to carry out their operations abroad to avoid legal accountability. To Canada's credit foreign claimants for the first time are being granted access to the courts to pursue Canadian companies for human rights abuses in foreign lands. Canada happens to be home to "50% of the world’s publicly listed exploration and mining companies" with 1,500 companies holding 8,000 properties in over 100 countries. The Guatemalan women behind the lawsuit are paving the way for a more responsible and transparent world.
