JSECoin, the browser mining token, recently reached another major milestone: after months of negotiation, they've been whitelisted by Kaspersky Antivirus.
For those not knowing how JSECoin works, well, it's a JavaScript mining client, which can be used by webmasters to monetize their website, replacing AdSense, for instance. It had a rocky start, because malicious usage of browser mining (Coinhive, for instance) created a bad reputation for this new business opportunity. Many people ran the Coinhive script without knowing it and many antivirus companies are considering Coinhive malware.
But if you really think about it, it's way better to donate 10% of your CPU cycles to a website that you like, instead being exposed to ads that are selected after a privacy-invasive scanning of your web history, ads which, on top of that, can consume even ,ore CPU cycles than 10%. Not to mention that some of these ads can have malicious mining code already injected in them, making the whole thing really creepy.
Recently, JSECoin also migrated to an opt-in system, in which users are specifically asked for consent in order to use the mining script in the browser.
Being whitelisted by Kaspersky is a huge step forward for this tiny little startup that I support even from its early days.
It also feels like a tiny little victory for myself, since I've taken a lot of heat for running this script on steem.supply, although I publicly announced both my support for it and the fact that I'm testing it. Back in November last year there was even a small scandal on Steemit, with '"righteous" people popping out from nowhere and pointing fingers at my "hijacking attempt of innocent users" (although, like I said, there was no hijacking going on, and the wave of aggressive comments was just generated by confusion, at best, and just plain stupidity, at worst).
Anyways, let's let the past in the past and enjoy what the present has to offer.
I'm a serial entrepreneur, blogger and ultrarunner. You can find me mainly on my blog at Dragos Roua where I write about productivity, business, relationships and running. Here on Steemit you may stay updated by following me .
