On Thursday, the U.S. State Department spokeswoman, Heather Nauert, told reporters that the U.S. plans to sell $1.42 billion in arms to Taiwan – the first such deal under the Trump administration and the first U.S. / Taiwan arms deal since the Obama administration’s 1.7 billion in 2015 and $6.4 billion arms deal just 5 years earlier, in 2010. Chinese Foreign Minister, Lu Kang, said that the U.S. should stop the deal in order “to avoid further impairing broadly cooperative China-U.S. relations.”
