During the 2016 election fossil fuels were often discussed as a cost effective means of producing energy for the US. However, the fact that they are heavily subsidized was never brought up or taken into account when comparing it to other means of producing energy. A recent study finds that 6.5% of the global GDP goes into subsiding dirty fossil fuels (over 5 trillion Dollars in 2015).
