Years ago, I went to a casino with friends, and took a cab to return to my place. Upon arrival, I found out that I had no CURRENCY at all except some amount of the casino chips. I had no choice but to offer the chips to the driver, and he, who was also the casino-goer, gladly accepted them!
This episode, along with others, made me think over what Money and Currency are, respectively.
The casino chip in the episode functioned exactly as a Money would with properties as below;
- A medium of exchange
- A unit of account
- A store of value
- Fungible
- Portable
- Durable
- Cognizable
수년 전, 친구들과 어느 카지노에 갔다가 숙소로 돌아가려고 택시를 탔다. 도착 후 요금을 내려고 보니 ‘통화’가 하나도 없었고 카지노 칩만 조금 있었다. 어쩔 수 없이 기사님께 칩을 대신 드려도 되겠냐고 여쭈었고, 마침 기사님도 그 카지노에 출입하시던 분이라, 흔쾌히 받아주셨다!
이 해프닝은 내가 화폐(Money)와 통화(Currency)에 대해 각각 생각해보는 또 하나의 계기가 되었다. 여기서 카지노 칩은 아래와 같은 속성들을 가지고 정확하게 ‘화폐’로써 기능해주었다;
- 교환의 매개체
- 계산의 단위
- 가치의 저장
- 교환/대체 가능
- 이동성
- 내구성
- 인지가능성
Obviously, the chip had all the properties mentioned above. Thus, I strongly believe the chip WAS money in the episode, although it was not commodity money nor fiat money. And if this money circulates within an economic system as a general means of payment, it also becomes a currency (The term ‘currency’ was originated from Latin currens-entis, which means, ‘in circulation’).
In this sense, the chip could become a CURRENCY if ever all the people living in the city the casino is located at generally accept it as a means of payment just as the driver did. But the reality is, the chip circulates only within the casino (the driver was an exception, of course), so it cannot be called a currency.
Then, it can be said that what makes money a currency depends on if it circulates within an economic system. Then, what makes people circulate a money? That’s the trust that all the people who use it put into it. In other words, a money becomes a currency based upon the trust people put into it. The most representative currency, therefore, is fiat money, e.g., USD, EUR, JPY, etc.
분명히, 그 카지노 칩은 위에 열거된 속성들을 모두 가지고 있었다. 그래서 저 해프닝에서만큼은 칩은 ‘화폐’였다, 비록 실물화폐나 명목화폐는 아니었지만. 그리고 만일 이 ‘화폐’가 어느 경제시스템에서 일반적인 지불수단으로써 통용된다면, 또한 ‘통화’도 될 것이다 (Currency라는 단어는 라틴어 currens-entis, 즉 순환(통용)된다라는 단어에서 비롯되었다고 한다).
이런 의미에서, 아주 만약 그 카지노가 위치한 도시에 사는 모든 사람들이, 그 기사님이 했던 것처럼 칩을 지불수단으로 받아준다면, 칩은 곧 ‘통화’가 될 수 있다. 그러나 현실은, 그 칩은 오직 그 카지노 안에서만 통용되므로(기사님은 예외다, 물론) 통화가 될 수 없다.
그러면, 화폐가 통화가 되느냐 하는 것은, 그 화폐가 하나의 경제시스템 내에서 통용되느냐의 여부로 결정된다고 볼 수 있다. 그럼 사람들이 어떤 화폐를 통용할 수 있는 근거는 무엇일까? 그건 바로 그 화폐를 사용하는 이들이 갖는 신뢰이다. 다시 말해, 화폐는 사람들의 신뢰를 바탕으로 통화가 되는 것이다. 따라서 가장 대표적인 통화로 USD, EUR, JPY같은 명목화폐를 들 수 있다.
But the thing is, can we really put our full trust upon those fiat moneys?
In other words, is it really okay to trust governments, politicians and central bankers regarding the fiat money’s value under the circumstances of imprudent and reckless Quantitative Easing, constantly rising debts, and its subsequent debasement?
그런데 과연 그러한 명목화폐를 전적으로 믿을 수 있을까?
다시 말해, 무분별한 양적 완화와 계속되는 부채 증가, 그리고 그에 따른 통화가치절하를 보면서도 명목화폐의 가치에 있어서 정부나 정치인들, 중앙은행 등을 신뢰해도 될까?

What about Korean Won?
No one would refute that the value of KRW would be severely damaged if ever another Korean war happens.
I believe all the risks mentioned above could be one of the reasons that we’ve got to pay attention to cryptocurrencies seriously. And I'm not alone. Goldman Sachs recently agreed for good reason that Bitcoin is money.
Well, this topic requires in-depth observation, research, and analyses, so I’ll create another post to cover them. Many steemers’ advice and insight would be highly welcomed.

전쟁 발발 시 그 가치에 심각한 damage가 있을 것임은 반박불가다.
위와 같은 모든 risks를 고려할 때, 암호화폐에 대해 진지하게 접근할 또 하나의 이유가 된다고 믿는다. 이렇게 믿는 건 나뿐만이 아니다. Goldman Sachs 역시 Bitcoin이 Money라고 동의한 데에는 이유가 있다.
