These hungry little mouths look like highly magnified insect parts in black and white.
Called Stomatium, which derives from the Greek word stoma, meaning mouth, these little mesemb succulents are about to flower. You'll miss the flowers if you look for them during the day though, the flowers only open when the sun goes down, because the flowers are pollinated by moths. They stay open until around midnight.
This is the plant in natural colour. The straight shapes are the closed flowers, which will open later.
