El Conde Verde
Una de las esculturas que más me gustaron cuando visité Turín fue precisamente el Monumento al Conte Verde en la piazza Palazzo di Città. La imagen caballeresca situada frente al ayuntamiento. Me gustó mucho su dinamismo, como apoya la rodilla sobre los cuerpos vencidos de los enemigos que intentan proteger de él. La propia imagen dice mucho. Seguro que si Don Quijote la viera se quedaría pasmado.
Cuando la visitamos, ya habían dispuesto los adornos navideños. Habían instalado unas hileras de pequeños paquetitos colgantes que cubrían toda la plaza. El contraste era grande entre el espíritu navideño de paz y la violencia vigorosa del caballero medieval.
La escultura representa al conde Amadeo VI de Saboya en su victoria contra los turcos. Es obra del escultor Pelagio Palagi (1775-1860) y se erigió en 1853.
Amadeo VI fue uno de los personajes más importantes de la saga Saboya. Durante su reinado consiguió aumentar mucho su poder y sus dominios. Llegó a tener un territorio considerablemente que ocupaba todos los Alpes occidentales. Su fama aumentó cuando acudió a la llamada del Papa Urbano V y fue a una cruzada contra los turcos, donde obtuvo una victoria memorable en Galípoli. Esta gran batalla le supuso un considerable prestigio y es, precisamente, la representada en la escultura.
Amadeo VI nació en 1334 y ascendió al trono a la temprana edad de nueve años. Siempre fue un joven emprendedor y de gran astucia. Fue un auténtico caballero medieval que participó en numerosos torneos durante su juventud. Le gustaba llevar el color verde como distintivo y por ello gano se ganó el apodo de el “Conde Verde”.
El Conde Verde llegó a tener un considerable prestigio y poder en Europa e intervino en numerosos conflictos. Sin embargo no murió en ninguna contienda sino que la peste pudo con él y falleció en 1383, cuando contaba 49 años de edad.
The Conte Verde
One of the sculptures that I liked the most when I visited Turin was precisely the Monument to the Conte Verde in the Piazza Palazzo di Città. The chivalrous image located in front of the town hall.
