Here is a little titbit of information about sheep that you may not have known. They can fall victim to all kinds of insects that can make their lives very difficult. Horrid little flies that lay eggs in their nostrils or ears. These eggs hatch little worms that will drive the sheep crazy causing them to hit their heads against a tree or a rock leading to injury and even death.
Can you imagine that level of desperation? Sometimes you and I can end up in a similar situation without the help of little insects. Little thoughts of fear, worry and panic can run rampant until you lose control and feel completely overwhelmed.
In Biblical times a shepherd had a simple remedy for this challenge faced by the sheep under his care. He would pour oil over their heads preventing the insects from going where they will cause harm. Can you imagine the peace that came when those little flies and worms were removed?
In Psalm 23 David describes God as the shepherd that takes care of us and in verse five he says.
You anoint my head with oil; ...
When your thoughts start to run away like a speeding train. When little worries and fears all start to add up causing you to feel utterly overwhelmed, it is time to turn to your Shepherd to pour oil over your head.
Paul says it this way.
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Php 4:6-7 NIV
I pray that you will know peace from anxiety and fear this week. Peace that transcends all understanding. Peace that will help you to see solutions. Peace that will give you strength. Peace that will give you back control.
