Earlier today we had a power outage where I live. The frequency of these outages have increased in recent times, yet this one caught me somewhat off guard. My laptop battery was low. My cell phone's battery was even lower and my Kindle the lowest of all. And there I was with time to make use of these devices after a very busy period but they were about to leave me high and dry.
I'm sure you've been in a similar situation and have developed a regime for keeping your devices charged. You do not get into your car for a long trip and the tank is empty or your phone is not charged. It is important to be prepared and keeping every relevant battery charged is one of them.
However, we neglect to charge our own batteries. We pretend that we can keep going and going and going. Life is not inclined to offer us pitstops or schedule events and challenges for our convenience. We need to find a rhythm that will enable us to keep going for the long haul. It is unwise to let our batteries drop into the red zone before we stop to recharge. If we need to dig deep while in the red zone, we may not have enough left to make it.
Jesus speaks this invitation in Matthew 11.
"Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you'll recover your life. I'll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won't lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you'll learn to live freely and lightly."
I love the way The Message phrases it. And I love the invitation!
Your life needs the right rhythm!
You need to be plugged into a source of power!
You need to recharge often enough!
I will be writing about the unforced rhythms of grace at a later stage. It is the most beautiful concept in the universe! May you experience some of it this week.
