Doing what you love and getting paid for it seems out of reach for many. I thought so, and then proved myself wrong.
I am really excited to be a part of the Steemit community! I've been a music producer for over 15 years, and I want to share how I'm FINALLY turning the corner in making my passion into my career.
When I was 14 I released my first album. I made the instrumentals and a buddy of mine did the rapping.
We sold over 5,000 copies from the trunks of our cars (just like MC Hammer did). I saw some success then, but the pressure was on to do what "normal" people do and go to college.
Well I can confidently say that college did nothing for me and graduated with a degree and couldn't find a job that could utilize my pricey education.
So what's the point?
Within the last year I decided to give myself no free time. I work 45 hours a week at the ol' day job, and the rest is spent creating a business from the ground up earning income doing what I love.
Technically I sold my first instrumental when I was 15 years old, but after that I did NOTHING. Years of putting effort into a communications degree and additional years of working where I didn't need it in the first place I decided maybe something needs to change.
I then began to think about that beat I sold all those years ago. It was easy money, and I'll never forget the feeling I got when I sold it. It was time to start selling my music again, and not letting failure get in the way.
I got out the laptop and just starting writing music again. Like it was being held hostage inside for years with an opportunity for freedom it just came flooding out.
I then set up a website for myself (www.smizzlebeatz.com). Then a mailchimp account, and started networking, and growing my content.
I feel like I'm doing what I was put on this earth to do, and what I love more than anything on this earth making music.
I'm just starting though. I still work my "9-5", but I have big aspirations. Along the way I'll share with you insight on the journey and share lessons I'm learning as I go.
For this post, just remember that you CAN do what you love. This isn't the only lesson I'm conveying though. It's NEVER too late to start, and life on this earth is too short not to be as happy as you can possibly be.
I'm excited to be here and thank you to anyone who took the time to read this. I'll see you around next time!
