Sometimes I know exactly where I am going. In that case it’s easy, pick a route and go.
More often I have an idea where I’d like to end up, and generally speaking a direction to go.
Once in a while I just follow the front wheel and see where it takes me.
Cactus Blooms and Aloe Vera
The Box Canyon Monument is a non descript site on San Diego County route 2 that crosses the desert from Ocotillo, CA to State Highway 78. The road has it's time of very straight and some incredible corners interspersed. It gains lots of altitude from Sea Level to over 5000' ASL. The Box Canyon Monument is a wide spot in the road with a big bronze plaque commemorating the Mormon Battalion's hacking a road through it. It was the first overland route to Southern California. I stop there most every time I go by.
We are most clearly talking remote. It's a long way from no place, and traffic is very light. My kind of place.
Prickly Pear growth
I come by here at least 15 times per year. I love the high country in the Laguna Mountains and the roads that run through. The Mt. Palomar South Entry is considered one of the 10 best motorcycle roads in the US. Vrrrooommmmmm.
Century Plants Bolt
Century plants do not bloom once every hundred years, it's actually only seven to ten years. They bolt (send that big stem up), bloom and then die when the seed pods are full.
Century Plant and Ocotillo Blooms
Ocotillo is nature's answer to Concertina wire. The spikes on those spindly stems are incredibly sharp and just bite you every time you try to touch. You can find old places around here where the pioneers planted Ocotillo for fences. Nothing, repeat No Thing will go through an Ocotillo wall. It would keep wolves from the cows. Beautiful and nasty when it turns green and blooms, it's just nasty when it is dry.

The Box Canyon Monument area is just an incredibly diverse small area. I stop often and always find something to get my curiosity boiling.
