I know some people like to drive, but it's mostly a boring process that I'd be happy to leave to a machine. This demo of an autonomous system from Nissan is very impressive. I've seen the Tesla systems that can handle motorways, but this is on urban roads with traffic lights and roundabouts. It appears to cope very well with those.
There's mention of this being an option in 2020. That's only 3 years away! They need to radically shrink the computers that are consuming 1.5kW and integrate the cameras, screens etc better, but that seems feasible. We know the electronics will get cheaper and faster. I've been wondering if the software can keep improving, but it really looks like it is. People have limits to their driving ability, but machines can keep improving and they don't get distracted. The car systems can be watching all around, all the time. The issues are likely to be with laws, insurance and other non-technical aspects. I think such vehicles will make the roads safer.
We're living in the future.
