I’ve had a few cars in my time. Let’s see if I can remember them all.
My very first car was bought by my dad and it was awesome. A Mark 1 Ford Escourt. The stereo was bigger and better than the entire car, but it was a really good first car and I learned a lot about vehicle maintenance while I had it.
That was eventually replaced by a mini (I think). I was an old version, not a sporty version. Lots of fun to drive, but it had no heater so it was freezing cold in winter.
Then came the Toyota Corolla. It was an ok car. Nothing flash. It wasn’t exactly fun to drive. It was a granddad’s car.
I also owned a Fiat of some kind for a week or two. What a disaster that was!
I travelled a bit and ended up buying two cars in England.
The first one was a Trumph Spitfire – a two seater rag-top that I cruised around the south of England while I was working on a farm picking hops and apples. We got seven people in that car one time. Which was really useful because it ran out of gas, so they were on hand to help push it back to the farm.
It was in fact a heap of crap though. So I swapped it for a Ford Escort Estate. This was a good utility car for travelling and it didn’t let me down until the starter motor died a month or so before I left to go travelling again. So I walked away and left it on the farm for the boys to have if they wanted it.
Back in NZ and next up was a Subaru Leone. This was a really nice car. I quite liked it (even though the throttle cable jammed one night and I blew the engine up!) . It eventually rusted apart in the driveway when I shifted to Wellington.
Next car to be tortured by my crappy driving was a Ford Laser hatchback with a leaky sunroof. This was an ok car until it rained, and then you couldn’t see out the windscreen. I can still remember driving home from my parent’s place one night with my head out the driver’s window so I could see where I was going.
Soon after that adventure I had saved up enough to get a much better class of clunker, and I bought my Toyota Rav4. I loved this little car! It was very cool to drive and I went on road trips all over the North Island in it. It only had two doors however and what with one thing and another, my girlfriend at the time didn’t like it. So I had to upgrade. The things you do for love.
So I bought my first ever brand new car – a Mazda3 SP25. It was such a nice car to drive, smooth and quiet, with a windscreen you could see out of even when it rained. It handled corners, and bumps, and had a boot you could put anything into.
But it had one small drawback, it had a manual transmission. When my wife decided to learn to drive, we found that she just couldn’t get it to work with a manual transmission, so the car had to go. I was very sad to say goodbye to my first ever brand new car (that my wife got an awesome deal on).
It was replaced with another Mazda. This one is also brand new. It’s a Mazda CX3, and I really love this car!
It is a cute car and so easy to drive. Every time I go to climb into it, it makes me smile. It has toys in it like a heads-up display, Bluetooth connection to your phone. My wife has played music from the Interweb through her phone and onto the car stereo while we were driving through the countryside!
So this is my latest car. It probably won’t be my last, but if it is, I’d be happy to be driving this for the next 40 years or so.
So there you go Steve, that’s my car list.
This post was inspired by Steve’s post over here. I recommend you go and check it out and give him some love for posting the topic, and getting me thinking about something other than running ;-)
