On November 27, one of the Korean films premiered on Netflix. I myself found out about this film from a friend and immediately became interested when I found out that the cast of this film was my favorite Eonni, Park Shin-hye. But when I found out that the genre of this film was a thriller, I began to lose hope for this film. I'm still traumatized by the film Train to Busan, which made me mad to death. I checked the Netflix app and okay, I watched this movie.
Synopsis of the film The Call
When I started watching this film, I only read a little of the synopsis, which is about terror from telephone lines. What I thought at that time was Park Shin-hye, who just lost her cellphone, suddenly got terror from her home phone. But I was wrong. He gets calls from the same house but in a different dimension of time.
Seo Yeon, played by Park Shin-hye, got a call from Oh Young-sook, a girl who lived in the house in 1999. I think this premise is quite interesting and promising. I myself really enjoyed the beginning to the middle of this film. Where at that time Seo Yeon told about events in the future, when Seo Yeon told about Seotaiji in the 2000s, and when Seo Yeon got the items sent by Oh Young-sook. Until finally Seo Yeon asked Young-sook to prevent the fire that made her lose her father and at that moment Seo Yeon's future changed.
Here the original character Oh Young-sook began to be shown, how terrible he was when Seo Yeon did not pick up the phone because he left with his family. In this part of the scene I can see the 'black' part of Oh Young-sook. Especially when Seo Yeon told Young-sook's death and Young-sook changed it, okay this is the pinnacle of the thriller genre of The Call film.
Best Advice: Don't Watch to the End
The ending moment is a moment that is often eagerly awaited by the audience, but for the film The Call you should skip or watch this film before the film is over. Why? This is because the ending of this film will suddenly break your mood. Those of you who have enjoyed this film from the start can suddenly fall apart from watching this film until it's finished.
I'm going to tell him a picture of the shitty ending of The Call. After Oh Young-sook managed to save himself from death, he began to be brutal. First, he killed his stepmother and mutilated her and then put her in the refrigerator. Second, he killed Seong-ho, Seo Yeon's uncle, who found Young-sook's mother's body in the refrigerator. From then on, Young-sook began to take control of Seo Yeon's life from the past. He killed Seo Yeon's father and tried to kill Seo Yeon's mother. Then ... This film closes with the disappearance of Seo Yeon and Seo Yeon's mother when they were walking together. Yes, the ending is clear. Even on YouTube, there are many analyzes of the intent of this ending.
Oh Young-sook's character and his stepmother's influence
At the beginning Oh Young-sook called Seo Yeon, he called Seo Yeon by the name of the aunt who owns a shop near the house. Young-sook asks for help because he got abused by his stepmother. Young-sook's mother is a shaman who believes Young-sook brings bad luck and curses, so Young-sook's mother often performs rituals to get rid of bad luck. While watching this part, I can see how normal Young-sook is but that normality is ruined by his stepmother's treatment. Nobody is okay with such treatment, including Oh Young-sook himself. She becomes a terrible girl, likes to be alone, and eventually becomes a psychopath because of the treatment of her stepmother. This part reminds me of the drama Flower Evil where the character Do Hyun-soo, played by Lee Joon-ki, received almost the same treatment by the villagers and he became an expressionless person. In this part as well as Jeon Jong-seo's acting I really appreciate it.
Don't Try To Change The Past
The message I get from watching this film is don't try to change the past, because it will affect the future and make a lot of messy things. Yes, actually we can't change the past, right. However, we should not regret what has happened in the past. Because it's not something that can be changed. As a viewer who is often confused by the time dimension fantasy genre, I feel that there are many odd things in this film, one of which is when Seo Yeon managed to change the past, what about Seo Yeon's memory with her life? Wouldn't he have a different memory from the people around him?
But as a spectator I only make a film a spectacle. Maybe there are many things that can be used as discussion material, but we don't need to get too into the film, because a film is just a fictional story that doesn't need to be confused with the real world. Let's enjoy movies as entertainment.
