The trailer above is for a new series that will air on HBO Romania starting this autumn. The shooting started a few months ago (not in the original city, Ramnicu Valcea, but in Timisoara).
Feels strange to see the city in which you were born called Hackerville. Yeah, the whole movie is about a small town in the middle of Romania, called Ramnicu Valcea, and dubbed ""Hackerville" after Norton made a documentary about it with the same title.
I was born there. I spent my childhood and adolescence there. I left that city in 1990, way before the Internet was even "a thing". And yes, I was able to study informatics in 1988, on Spectrum Z80 clones, called Tim S, and assembled in Timisoara.
They were still using punched cards in the big factories. I remember, because my high school diploma involved writing a short program in Cobol, on punched cards.
The town got that surname in the early 2000s, though, based on the activity of a few individuals / groups, who were mostly scamming, not hacking.
I'm really looking forward to see what they will make out of it. I know for sure that a lot of the stuff that they say about that city is not true, at least when it comes to this - really undeserved - surname of "Hackerville".
