If there's one word to describe this movie, it's "visceral." This movie is a hard R for every imaginable reason - sex, nudity, profanity, and ultra- violence.
The overview of the story is that a crew of amateur filmmakers in Texas in 1979 rent a small piece of property on a plot of land owned by an elderly couple to film a pornographic movie. They don't tell the owners of the property why they're there (let that be a lesson to young filmmakers).
From the outset, the movie is a bit of a slow burn until everything turns into a blood bath.
The elderly wife is established as a woman who was once a gorgeous young lady who yearns for the attention that she lost. The elderly husband is established as having a heart condition that prevents him from having sex with his wife.
The young people have a mixture of personalities from alpha males to the liberal who is cool with all the free love until it starts to hit home. The women are a spectrum of attitudes, experiences, and behaviors.
Fundamentally, this is a movie about sex and angst and doubts about one's own adequacy.
It's also brutal. I've worked on enough slasher films and seen enough of them that I usually just play a game with myself to see if I can time out the jumps scares and the actual carnage perfectly. I usually can and this movie is no exception. I wasn't profoundly surprised about anything; but, sometimes, knowing what's coming is scarier than being suprised.
I'm far from being a huge fan of slasher movies; but, so far as the genre goes, it doesn't get much better than this.
If you like gore, nudity, sex, and a generally creepy tone, this is a movie to check out.
