Last night my other half and I had to vacate the house as our daughter was having some friends over. We were not particularly inspired by the movie offerings, but decided to give Wild Rose a try. We saw it at the Broadway in Letchworth. Dinner beforehand was at Wildwood which was nice enough, but very similar to many other pizza restaurants. There are four serving Italian food on one short street there.
This movie is a more realistic portrayal of the quest for fame than you will see generally. Rose-Lynn Harlan (played very well by Jessie Bluckley) is just out of prison and going back to her two young children. Life is hard and very un-glamorous, but she desperately wants to be a country singer.
Rose has to work out where her priorities lie. She is by no means perfect and lies her way through life. Her long-suffering mother (Julie Walters) tries to make her see sense.
This could be described as a 'gritty' movie. It is set in Glasgow and few concessions are made with the accents. I struggled to understand them at times. The characters live in real houses and I'm not sure much of it was shot in studios (but I could be wrong). It has comedy moments too and I did not find it too depressing. It made me smile a lot.
A big part is played by music and it is all country as you might expect. Jessie has a great voice and they used some real Scottish musicians for her band, including Phil Cunningham who we saw perform a couple of Christmases ago.
There is a lot of swearing, some sex and drugs, so maybe not one to watch with your young kids.
I would recommend it to music fans even if country is not your thing. I just wonder if it will need subtitles for some markets.
