Middle aged european women seeking easy african love. This is a movie that, not just touches on a taboo, it takes a full dive in and gives you an almost documentary view of the depravity of these women. Artistically it is full of contrasts. The fat, white women and the young and fit black men. The beauty of the scenery, and the ugliness of the women, their behaviour and selfloathing.
Some scenes are rather explicit, but the documentary style, makes it look quite innocent and certainly not pornographic. Rather you get a sense of disgust for these women and their unemphatic way of expecting love from these poor black men, while they at the same time take advantage of them. The theme of the movie is the ugliness of the illusion, based on the lack of empathy, that love and meaningful sex, can be bought.
The female actors need to get a thumbs up for their honest and open portrayal of the women, and the lead character specifically. She develops from the slightly shy tourist, who may have a few fantasies about the men around her and is is an easy victim of exploitation to practically a sexual predator, only realizing too late, that she is really the true exploiter.
This is quite a unique movie and may not be your cup of tee. But at least you cannot go unaffected, from what you see on the screen, and that counts for a lot in my book. Now it is not a movie i would want to watch again for a while, i do not find the theme that appealing. But it still has a lot of very artistic scenes, that makes it a worthwhile experience all in all but the slight chock effect of the first view, is not there the next time.
Note: It is one of three movies in a trilogy called "Paradies".
