Hey Steemians
As a DC fanboy, I'm always biased towards adaptations put out based on the IP but that does not mean im blind. I realise DC has fallen way behind Marvel in the movie department while in series its been hit and miss and of late mostly misses
- Constantine - Cancelled because it was lame
- Preacher - Got incredibly boring after season 1
- Flash - Season 3 and up become more PC and a teen drama
- Arrow - Was always a soap opera teen drama
- Supergirl - Major PC show and the content comes second
- Black Lightning - It cant get more PC based than this and the content isn't even used properly
- Legends of tomorrow - Season 3 it lost the plot and became a buddy comedy and PC fest
- Krypton - Just didn't have enough to capture any sort of interest with a paper thin character and storyline
- Gotham - Is circling the drain and has really begun to stagnate as a show
So yes I've given these shows a fair share of my time and I've been really disappointed by most of it. Some of it was really promising and lost the plot afterwards, but it always ended up disappointed at how these attempts would take such an amazing IP and fail to realise its potential.
Marvel/Disney might have slipped up
So we all know on the movie front Marvel has it on lock while on the series side Marvel really only hit pay dirt with the Netflix original daredevil/defenders universe. They saw what a cash cow series could be after allowing Netflix free reign and now they've called back their IP and look to use it to launch their own streaming service.
To fill the gap Netflix is looking at some DC IP and with the launch of DC's exclsuive streaming series its given the studios creative freedom to do as they please and not go after mainstream views like the CW series do.
The DC universe
The DC universe starts with Titans and will roll out 3 other series to broaden the Universe going forward, namely:
- Titans
- Doom Patrol
- Swamp Thing
- Stargirl
So what is Titans all about and why do I think its a game changer for DC? Let's dive in and see shall we!
Plot of Titans
Not to be confused with Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go is an adaptation of the popular comic book supergroup. Titans follows young heroes from across the DC Universe as they come of age and find belonging in a gritty take on the classic Teen Titans franchise.
Dick Grayson (The First Robin) and Rachel Roth (Raven), a special young girl possessed by a strange darkness and get embroiled in a conspiracy that could bring Hell on Earth. It's up to the now-retired masked crime fighter to protect her and once again become the boy wonder. Joining them along the way are the hot-headed Starfire and love-able Beast Boy.
Together they uncover Ravens history and become a surrogate family and a team of heroes.

What I thought of Titans
The series has a quite dark atmosphere as we know is DC's shtick but this time I think they walked the line pretty well. The story centres around Dick Grayson, the first Robin and how years of being a sidekick have taken its toll.
We see Dick has lost control while trying to get out the shadow of Batman and find out who he is. This incredibly darkened character almost beats people to death and cannot stop himself, similar to Daredevil but his motivations seem real and we can really see his angst with Brenton Thwaites, who plays the character doing it successfully, he really makes the role his own and is the best on-screen Robin ever.
It's not all dark though with the balance between the occasional jokes and the scenes where baddies get beaten up being used well.
The character on which the season is based on is Raven, she has all the teenage pain points a young girl would have not knowing her family and dealing with abilities of her kind.
Starfire is an overdone and too retro and I didn't think they character needed it to look cool when Anna Diop did a great job of bringing her to life. Beast Boy's brings in the comic relief and doesn't disappoint.
We also see Hawk, both Dove's, Elasti-woman, Mr Negative, Robotman, Crazyjane and Wondergirl make an appearance in the show too.
Oh and Jason Todd, the new Robin, this show is really is a treat for DC fans and the show itself is pretty good even if you're not a fan of the original content.
All the characters in the series are pretty endearing and the acting is decent and I really feel they got the formula right on this one.

My rating for Titans
The show is dark, gritty, stays true to the characters and makes changes that we can live with. It does a solid job of providing an orgin and back story for all the characters and gives us a sneak peek into the larger universe that DC is trying to build.
I think its a solid first effort and an 8 Batarang out of 10 from me
