When decided to host a contest about our favourite Reggae Culture films, I immediately thought of Cool Runnings. One normally doesn't associate bobsledding or snow with Rasta's and Jamaica, however, this Disney movie does a fine job of just that. It's one of my favourite movies, a real feel-good show about a Jamaican Bobsled team that manages to qualify and compete in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.
The movie is hilarious and very loosely based off a true story of Jamaica's first bobsled team, it was an absolute hit. I highly recommend you watch it, it stars John Candy as the coach of the team with the runners being Leon, Rawle D. Lewis, Malik Yoba and the Rasta breakman Doug E. Doug.
There are a few classic songs from the movie some by famous Jamaicans artists making it very relevant to the Reggae Genre. My favourite quote from the movie is "Rise and shine! It's butt-whippin' time!" The best scene is probably when they first get off the plane in minus 20-degree weather in Calgary, Canada. It's always funny watching people from tropical climates reacting to the Canadian cold for the first time. There are other classic scenes too but I don't mean to spoil anything.
