This criticism is more regarding Ray from Star Wars, but applies in many other situations:
The main problem is that they were born with full-power. Not only that but they were created with god-level attributes, without any flaws of their own. People like to see character being developed through the movie and not a god-like protagonist starting in full-power just being dragged around "because movie".
Regarding Doctor Who, it was more about dumbing the main character scripts with unnecessary stuff shoved within the episodes. Like Rosa Parks and the independence of the British Raj, where the writers ruined very interesting stories about important characters by inserting unnecessary Sci-Fi in it.
Also, reversing the gender of preexisting protagonists is a terrible idea as Ghostbusters(2016) have shown us.
