The original movie from 1941 was one if not the first movie I have ever seen
So needless to say it holds a special place in my movie heart
Since Hollywood ran out of things they just remodel classic cartoons into real life movies.
I have to admit I thought the Junglebook was great though
Disney gave Dumbo in the hands of Tim Burton
And with Danny DeVito, Collin Farrel, Michael Keaton and Eva Green the movie brings together quite some well know actors together.
And I feel everyone is doing a great job and it is a real good cast.
Danny DeVito as the little goofy, well liked but still a bit greedy Circus director is made for roles like this.
The story is about the elephant Dumbo, who gets born at a circus. He has such big ears that everyone is making fun of him till his mother cant take it anymore and gets locked away and even sold to another circus to seperate them as she got decleared mad when she steps up for her son.
At first the big ears seem like quite a disadventage but soon Dumbo realizes that he can fly with his ears.
Of course be becomes a major attraction with his abilities and the circus is constantly sold out, which gets him the attention of the big players in the entertainment world
The movie has a playtime of 112 minutes, which is almost double as long as the old one.
So they added several storylines. In the old version a mouse is dumbos only friend. Now he has 2 little kids as friend, who lost their mother and are a bit estranged to their father.
Maybe I am a bit too old now but for me the movie never came really together. Everyone suddenly loves Dumbo and goes out of their way to help him.
Of course you have the special feeling of a world created by Tim Burton which gives the movie a charm and atmosphere it is hard to not get sucked into.
The little one had blast watching the movie and she said it is her second favorite now.
She had quite an emotional rollercoaster. The sad beginning and the unfair treatment of Dumbos mum even brought some tears. But there was also a lot of laughing, excitement and overall joy with the movie.
She gave it a clear 10/10
As I mentioned at the beginning the movie is one of the firsts I ever watched and I can recall the same excitement to see Dumbo fly for the first time and the anger I had for the people who treated Dumbos mother so unfair.
So I cant deny that the magic the first one had is still somewhere preserved in the new one.
IMDB gives the movie 6.9 and I think that is a fair result as it feels very stretched sometimes to get a bit more screentime
