I used to think these superhero Marvel comics and movies were for children, but later I learned they are aimed at adults.

There's religious thinking in there, as you say, but their success also hints at the infantilisation of some societies, especially the USA, where people don't seem to want to develop beyond adolescence and adults actually want to hear the same story again and again, like toddlers insisting on hearing their same favourite story over and over and over, certain in the knowledge of its ending, before going to sleep.
