It's been a while since I wrote about a horror movie, so it is time to look a really good, but obscure horror movie called Caveat.
Caveat is the directorial debut of Damian Mc Carthy, who also wrote this movie. This is another excellent Irish horror movie, because most really good horror movies are not American. As you can tell from the poster this is a really weird horror movie, like super weird.
Isaac played by Jonathan French is a loner. He lives alone in his apartment, doesn't have any friends or relatives and he suffers from memory loss. One day, his friend Moe Barrett played by Ben Caplan comes by to offer him a job. He wants him to look after his niece, Olga (played by Leila Sykes) who is living all on her own and she is mentally disturbed. Her parents are no longer in the picture. He offers him an insanely high amount of money in return. Obviously he can't do it himself because he doesn't like his niece too much. It is time to put on your suspicious hat.
Isaac accepts the job and only later finds out about the problematic parts of the job. The niece lives on an island and Isaac can't swim. There is also no one there around, no neighbors on this isolated island. The niece is sometimes lucid and sometimes catatonic. And for the best part, Isaac has to wear a jacket that is closed by a lock and key and the jacket in attached by a chain to the floor. He can walk around the house, but the chain is too short to allow him to get into the niece's room. Oh, and he can't get outside of the house because of it. An absolute delight.
Obviously, pretty fast things become very creepy. But this movie will make you wonder pretty fast if there is there something supernatural going on, or is the creepy and scary part purely human. As you know, sometimes the worst monsters are simply human. It was confusing in the best way possible. And that bunny doll that you see on the poster is super creepy. This movie has a really good disturbing atmosphere.
I liked this movie a lot. It felt unique. There are so many horror movies that fall into genre clichés, but not this one. It felt pretty special. You think you know where this movie is going, but you have no idea. It was a fun ride.
If you have a hard time finding a good, not cliché horror movie, you should totally check this one out.
