Rotten Tomatoes contains reviews by many critics and is considered to be a general representative of critics' opinion about a movie. Once upon a time Rotten Tomatoes decided whether a movie will live or die at the box office. Most people when they saw a rotten on Rotten Tomatoes, they decided not to give the movie a chance. Now it seems that these days are coming to an end.
You started seeing it with movie like The Legend of Tarzan which had just 36% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the movie went on to make a healthy $356,700,357 at the box office.
But his year two movies went against their Rotten Tomatoes score with all of their might. I am talking about Venom and Bohemian Rhapsody.
Venom has a horrid 28% on Rotten Tomatoes while on the same site the 85% of movie goers on the site liked the movie. With $855,156,907 dollars at the box office on a $100 million dollars budget, Venom is a total hit and win for Sony and Amy Pascal. A win for audiences who stood behind the movie, while critics were not impressed by it.
Bohemian Rhapsody also didn't warm critics' hearts with just 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, while fans gave the same movie 90% on the same site. They didn't just like it, they loved it. And they paid to see it. Bohemian Rhapsody made over $702,552,268 dollars with a modest budget of just $52 million dollars. It is one of the most successful none-action movies of all time and the most successful musical movie of all time. Critics may not give this movie an Oscar nomination, but fans gave it their money and love.
Now Aquaman hit theaters. Now we know that critics hate DC and the Rotten Tomatoes score of this movie reflects it with score of 64%, while fans gave it a much more favorable 81% score. Fans are defiantly giving this movie their money. It made over $751,775,000 so far and it's predicated to make almost a billion dollars. Not bad for a DC movie with a not so familiar main character. Also, the fact that WB owns some part of Rotten Tomatoes doesn't help them with their scores so good for them for keeping the game clean. But Aquaman, despite it's not so impressive Rotten Tomatoes score, is making big splashes at the box office.
Is the era of Rotten Tomatoes coming to an end? I am not sure, but I do think that people will start taking it less seriously. Critics' general opinion cannot be so different from that of the fans or they won't take critics seriously. I do think that a rotten on Rotten Tomatoes will no longer kill a movie at the box office if it has positive fan buzz around it. It's time for a new way to score movies, something that takes both fans and critic into account.
