Sometimes when film companies fight against each other, the winner is the audience. Since the first Wonder Woman made so much money and Captain Marvel made over a billion dollars studios are trying to find that female lead movie that will bring them that big money.
Sure, not all such movies make money, Charlie's Angels and Terminator: Dark Fate both tanked at the box office, but they had their own problems that can be explained.

Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn - February 2020
This is not a summer movie, but the trailer sure feels like it. Harley Quinn played by Margot Robbie returns to the big screen while Cathy Yan will direct the movie. This time she is accompanied by many female anti-heroes or villains which will help her fight against Ewan McGregor's Black Mask and save Cassandra Cain.
I think that we are all super disappointed that we are not getting a Gotham City Sirens movie. Especially, since we are not getting that movie because Margot Robbie didn't want other popular characters to outshine her, especially since they will probably need to be played by other popular actresses. I have to say that this movie looks like Suicide Squad and that is in no way a complement. It looks like a big DC mess and I hope that I am wrong. There isn't a lot of buzz around the movie so for now I think it will do mediocre business at the box office.
Disney is bringing the beloved animated classic to the big screen in their live-action tradition. Only this time we are getting an epic war movie which is not a musical and doesn't have a dragon. Yifei Liu will take on the role of Mulan and the movie is directed by Niki Caro (North Country). The trailer for the movie looks amazing. However, not all Disney live action movies are sure blockbusters. Dumbo only did ok at the box office. Sure Aladdin and the Lion King made a lot of money, around a billion, but they were much closer to the source material then this movie seem to be. Plus, Yifei Liu political comments aren't going to help the movie. It could go either way.
Black Widow - May 2020
After a decade of waiting, the first female Avenger is finally getting her own solo movie. Scarlett Johansson is reprising her role as Black Widow and Cate Shortland (Berlin Syndrome) will direct the movie. As much as we all love Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, a lot of people feel that this movie is a little too late. We already said goodbye to the character in Avengers: Endgame, now we suppose to welcome her back? In the past no less.
Marvel seems to have done everything to make this movie appealing. The biggest one being that this movie seems to have the Captain America: Winter Soldier style and soundtrack. Rumors of other Avengers cameos and a fantastic cast which includes David Harbour and Rachel Weisz. The trailer was action packed and look pretty cool. Plus the movie got the official release date of a big Marvel movie that opens up the summer blockbusters season. This movie can be as small as Ant-Man (500 million) at the box office or as big as any billion dollars movie from Marvel like Captain Marvel, although I think it will end up making Captain America: Winter Soldier money (around 800 million), which is highly respectable.
Wonder Woman 1984 - June 2020
Gal Gadot returns as Wonder Woman and Patty Jenkins returns to the director's chair. This highly anticipated sequel took too much time to make. First they had to negotiate contracts as DC didn't have a contract with anyone for a sequel. Then there was the massive reshoots that were required after the not success of Justice League. Now that the trailer is here I think everyone can agree that it was worth the wait. It looks colorful, action packed, and has some amazing music. It helps that everyone loved the first movie and DC is in a good place right now after the epic success of the Joker.
This movie is almost a slam-dunk for a billion dollars. The big problems that it will face is that DC movies are still considered to be something of a not safe bet and the first movie lacked overseas appeal. Either because the movie had too much talking and not enough action or the calls to boycott the movie since Gal Gadot is an Israeli that served in the army harmed the movie, the movie only made half of its money outside of the U.S.A. if the sequel will want to make a billion it will need to display the 40-60 percent ratio that most blockbusters have or pull a Star Wars, which is also has a box office ration of 50/50, but it's enough for a billion as the U.S.A audience loves or used to love Star Wars. Still, I really hope it will make it into the billion dollar club.
I don't want to get into Star Wars toxic fans stuff or whether it is a female lead movie or not, so I left it out on purpose.
Which movie are you most excited to see? Are you going to see them all at the theater? I think I'll see at least two at the theater as Black Widow and Wonder Woman 1984 are a must see events for me. I don't see myself paying to see Birds of Prey, but maybe I will.
