This movie was a lot more fun than I anticipated. Jungle Cruise is based on a ride in Disneyland. Just like Pirates of the Caribbean so my expectations were not that high. But this movie got me hocked from the start. It is funny, fun, full of action, humor and great charismatic actors. It does have an old feeling to it, like a movie made in the 2000s or the late 90s, but I have no problem with that. Considering this movie made great business in the box office and on Disney+ I think most people didn't have a problem with it.
Emily Blunt plays Dr. Lily Houghton who is an exceptional woman during the 1900. She is both an intellectual and an adventurer and she is after the Tree of Life, a tree with petals that can cure any illness. She is joined on her adventure by her faithful brother MacGregor Houghton (Jack Whitehall, forever the idiot from Good Omens). Together they hire a ship to take them deep into the Amazon forest. The captain of the ship is Frank Wolff (Dwayne Johnson) who is a very charming con artist. But they are not the only ones looking for the tree of life and the others are worthy opponents. And some are comic relief characters. Together they all create a fun and compelling story.
The best part of the movie is by far Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson. They have really good chemistry together. They are funny, charismatic, and great with action. They are superb leading characters material and they nail their parts. They carry this movie with ease on their shoulders. In fact, they are so fantastic together that they just sign a new picture deal together for Amazon on top of a sequel to this movie. They are a duo to watch for.
The rest of the cast doesn't have much to do. Whitehall does his best with what he has and it isn't much. Everyone do their best, but they all have really small parts. Édgar Ramírez is great and so is Jesse Plemons who is hilarious in his ridicules role. They all have really small parts.
In order to find the tree our trio or more correctly, duo and someone who is just stuck there go through many adventures. There is action, character development, plot twists which aren't too original, but they are still fun. It is just a good time movie. I am not sure it is a must see on the big screen, but you should totally check it out. A good time is guaranteed. Also, I want that sequel.
