Malevolent is a horror movie directed by Olaf de Fleur Johannesson and stars Florence Pugh. This movie is better than I thought it will be, probably because it has a really surprising ending.
The movie takes place in Scotland in the 80s. Florence Pugh plays Angela, a disturbed young woman who along with her brother and some friends run a scam. They pretend to be a team of ghost hunters who can get rid of bothering ghosts. They promise to banish all evil spirits from any place. Most people who call them simply need comforting. It is easy money for the sibling and their friends, especially as the brother owes money to some serious people. The sibling's mother died and their grandfather (played by James Cosmo, Lord Commander of the Night's Watch for anyone who watched Game of Thrones) is the only family they have left. He is worried about his grandchildren, and especially his granddaughter who cares about him deeply. Scamming life isn't for everyone, but things are going ok for them.
Scamming life seems to be going as normal, until one day they are called to a house where a hideous murder took place many years ago. The woman who used to run a foster home for children many years ago complains about noises all around the house. This case turns out to be unusual one for all ghost hunting team. Especially as the owner starts suspecting that they are faking their expertise.
Florence Pugh carries the entire movie on her shoulders and she sells it. Her acting is what makes everything around her believable. The rest of the cast are alright, but no one stands out. The 80s vibe isn't that noticeable, just a few music and clothe choices, but nothing too out there. The movie is suspenseful and keeps you on the edge of your seat for most of the time. And that ending, I did not see it coming. That was worth the entire movie in my opinion. It was an original twist in my opinion.
The movie is not a horror masterpiece, but a good scary way to pass an evening.
