Captain Marvel movie just got a new screenwriter, Geneva Robertson-Dworet.
All the headlines went Captain Marvel hired “Tomb Raider Reboot Writer” (for example: http://movieweb.com/captain-marvel-movie-writer-geneva-robertson-dworet/). Which is interesting because Tomb Raider isn’t out yet, so no one knows if it’s actually a good movie. Movies based on computer games don't have a good history.
This is something that happens a lot in Hollywood, people sign their next deal before their project actually comes out. Because if it fails, well your next job is already secured. Geneva Robertson-Dworet is going to be very busy not just with writing Captain Marvel, but also writing Sherlock Holmes 3, Gotham City Sirens and Dungeons & Dragons (imdb). These are all big budget movies, who can afford a big, talented, experienced screenwriter. They all hired a screenwriter whose scripts have never been tested. Lately I get the feeling the Hollywood doesn’t care about scripts and this confirms it.
Previously the script written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Meg LeFauve (Inside Out). It appears now that both are moving on to other projects, so perhaps Geneva Robertson-Dworet is only needed for re-writes. Most people knew these re-writes are coming when they saw that Captain Marvel will be coming out two entire years after Wonder Woman. That is a lot of time to change things in a movie. It’s enough time to see if Wonder Woman is a success, to see what makes her a success, and borrow some elements and improve upon them. Similarly to what they did with Civil War and Batman v Superman. Civil War was clearly way way better, but now Marvel might have their work cut out for them.
You can already see the similarities and improvements just from the small amount of information we have about Captain Marvel. Both are periodical movies. While Wonder Woman is set in World War 1, Captain Marvel will take us to the fun 90’s. An easier sell. Seriously, I’ve already seen people talking about the soundtrack for this movie. Captain Marvel will also have a war in it, the Kree-Skrull war, so it’s going to have a similar edge as Wonder Woman. I think that it’s pretty obvious that Captain Marvel can bring a powerful political message to the table, especially as Skrulls can cause mass paranoia. Wonder Woman’s political message seemed to have been completely missed by most viewers. It will be interesting to see what else Marvel will do. Heck they can even make Captain Marvel posters similar to Wonder Woman's as they made Civil War posters similar to those of Batman v Superman.
I have faith in Marvel, I don’t have faith in hiring new screenwriter who scripts have never been made into movies for big budget movies. I know that Marvel has a reputation for being cheap, but the script is the most important part of the movie so they better get it right.
I loved Wonder Woman and I am sure that Captain Marvel will be a great movie. Totally awesome! It’s important that we have them both and we need more female lead superhero movies. Two is not enough. I just don’t like this strategy that Marvel is taking.
