Ever since this movie arrived on Netflix I keep hearing about how great it, and how it's now a classic of the horror genre. If these are your expectations, than please lower them before watching this movie.
In this movie five collage friends: Phil (Arsher Ali), Dom (Sam Troughton), Hutch (Robert James-Collier), Luke (Rafe Spall), and Rob (Paul Reid) are sitting in a pub and trying to decide on a destination for a shared vacation. As the years have gone by it's harder for them to stay in touch and they also feel like they are too old for some activities, but not Luke. He wants to behave like he still just finished collage. Rob wants to go hiking in Sweden and everyone else don't agree. The meeting seems to end with no decision being made. Once outside, Rob goes after Luke into a liquor store and then they realize it's being robbed. In a tragic turn of events Rob gets beaten to death. He has left is a tremendous amount of guilt.
In order to honor their friend, the four remaining friends decide to take the hike in Sweden along Kungsleden, the King's Trail. Due to heavy rains, Dom slips and injures his knee and ankle. In order to get to their final destination faster, they decide to take a shortcut through the forest. That's where the horror starts. And when the movie starts to fail in my opinion. The pacing in uneven, the scary stuff seems not so scary to me, and it even feels like The Blair Witch Project rip-off at time.
The best thing about the movie is the ending. By far. Also, the monster design is pretty epic and original. Still, it was not horror enough for me, nor was it interesting enough and I found myself thinking about other things while watching it.
If you have nothing else to try it will be enjoyable, but you might want to watch something better.
I give it 6.5/10
