So the new Tolkien teaser trailer is out. I know that casual fans of Lord of the Rings are pretty happy with this teaser. However, I am more of a hardcore fan. So I am really not happy about the part where the trailer says what the story is about. No, it's not a story about friendship and all of that – that is all secondary. It's about a legacy, mythology and language.
Tolkien wanted to create a mythology for England. One that can stand with the mythologies of other countries. It's not just a story, it's a legendarium. His work is greatly influenced by foreign mythologies. Also, Tolkien was heavily influenced by his experience in World War I, but Lord of the Rings is clearly influenced from the period of time in which it was written – World War II. It is not the horrors of the war, it is what the war is about.
Also, Tolkien was a linguist and the loved words, language. He invented many languages for his stories that is an important part of what he did. Not secondary by any means. Every word he wrote was a slow and deliberate process.
Well, hopefully the movie will introduce Luthien and open the hatch for a Silmarillion movie or tv show.
I am still going to watch this at the theater and probably all Tolkien fans will, so I don't think this movie should worry about its box office.
