I loved Wonder Woman 1984! It just gave me the feels. It wasn't epic or ground breaking as the first one, but it is a great movie. It's just very 80s and a clear homage to much older Christopher Reeve Superman movies. Something that has caused some controversial for the movie. I still really loved it, it is just a feel good movie.
Patty Jenkins is back directing the movie, plus this time she also had a hand in writing the script. Gal Gadot is back as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman and Chris Pine is back as Steve Trevor. Plus, the flashback scene gave us some cool glimpses to our other favorite amazons such as Robin Wright as Antiope, Connie Nielsen as Hippolyta and Lilly Aspell is back as a slightly older young Diana. Other Amazons with smaller roles have also returned. Plus we have some two bigger new comers: Kristen Wiig as Barbara Minerva and Pedro Pascal as Maxwell Lord. The cast is great, everyone does a fantastic job. But in a very 80s sort of way.
This movie is totally different from the previous one. When they said they were doing reshoots in a Flashpoint sort of way, it's not what I imagined, but I get it. The character has gone through a sort reboot in this movie. She is all about love, compassion and caring and less about fighting. There is no sword and shield here. Just the amazing kingdom come armor taken straight out of the comics (by Alex Ross and Mark Waid). It is a really big change to the already beloved character.
The tone of this movie is very different than the previous one. It's not just set in the 80s, it feels like it was created in the 80s. I mean it goes full 80s. Terrible hair and clothe that flatters no one. Over the top acting and awkward scenes. Terrible effects that feel like they were done so on purpose. It has a totally different feeling to it. It doesn't feel grounded in reality at all like the previous one. It is cheesy over the top, and yet optimistic and full of hope. Also, this movie brings in the feels, but not the action. The movie has high risks, and some really strong emotional tension, but it has very few action scenes which might bother some people. It is a brand new Wonder Woman world.
The movie follows Diana in 1984. No references to the importance of the year or Big Brother. Now Diana is working in the Smithsonian Museum. Where Dr. Barbara Minerva has just started working. On top of her day job Diana also works as a savior as Wonder Woman. It almost feels like she is the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man most of the time, until big trouble comes along. An ancient artifact is revealed that causes a whole lot of trouble. Along the way Barbara Minerva becomes Cheetah as it was clear that was going to happen from the start. The movie also found an original way to bring back Steve. Even though he is from the past, and despite the trailer, his presence is not there for comedic effect, but to wonder at how far the world has come, and to be Diana's partner once again. And for some comedic effect. Maxwell Lord is the true big bad of the movie. He is a failed business man and prominent television figure. All he wants is more, and sometimes more isn't good for you or the people around you. He does and causes some pretty crazy shit to go down. It is interesting in my opinion. Plus, Diana tries her best to solve conflicts without violence this time around, she loves her enemies and tries to get them to see the error of her ways. It is very comic booky in my opinion.
The movie also has a brilliant mid-credit scene, so you better watch out for that one.
I just love it. I know that some people don't. They will have a serious problem with the tone of the movie, but I just loved it. Plus, it is a Christmas movie, so it's good it's out now. It also brings such great human messages that it warms the heart and Gal Gadot just brings so much honest warmth to the role. I can't stress how much I loved this movie. I can't wait to see it again.
