I think that at this point it is fairy certain to say that Wonder Woman is an award movie. It launched its Oscar campaign back in October and we are starting to see that the movie is gaining some serious momentum. I am not talking about the awards that Wonder Woman raked at the Teen Choice Awards, that’s just cute. I am talking about serious awards. Wonder Woman was nominated at the Satellite Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay. Gal Gadot won Rising Star Award for an Actress at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. However, Wonder Woman’s biggest accomplishment has just arrived as Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot won the Spotlight Award from the National Board of Review. The NBR isn’t a great Oscar predictor, but it is a more prestigious award that now puts Wonder Woman officially on the awards map.
Another important step in the movie’s awards campaign will be the Golden Globes. Nominations will be announced on December 11th and I predict that Wonder Woman will be nominated in almost all categories. The Golden Globes appreciate popular movies more than the Oscars. Last year Deadpool was nominated, I see no reason for Wonder Woman not to be nominated as well. However, unlike Deadpool, Wonder Woman will take home a few awards. I think it has a good chance for the Best Screenplay award. Up until a few weeks ago, I would have said that the Best Director award for Patty Jenkins seemed almost a slam dunk. But then came a little movie called Lady Bird and it seems more and more likely that Greta Gerwig will take the win if not the nomination from Patty Jenkins. I don’t think that any awards show is ready to have two female directors nominated. But there are still the acting nominations in which I think Chris Pine has a pretty good chance for Best Supporting Actor.
It will be historical if Wonder Woman will be nominated in the main categories for the Oscars, and so far, it seems almost certain that it will get main categories nominations and perhaps even a win.
