British climber Selina Dicker cheated death twice, on separate attempts to climb the mountain.
On her first attempt last year, Dicker was at Base Camp, preparing for her long climb to the summit, when an earthquake struck, killing 16 Sherpas who were just ahead of the then 37 year old. Despite coming within an inch of certain death, she was not deterred from retrying her ascent, although she was, with good reason, forced to retire her climb on that occasion.
Then in April this year, Selina returned to finish her adventure, when another, more catastrophic earthquake hit Base Camp, this time causing an avalanche that Dicker was forced to run from. Luckily, she managed to escape the snow in time, but at least 22 people were killed in the avalanche, with almost 9,000 losing their lives across Nepal as a result of the quake.
