The search for more random art continues as I plod around the city of Da Nang in search of more artistic vision in the public spaces of the city. Most of the graffiti is garbage tags as I have mentioned many times before and very little of it seems to have been allowed and this is a likely contributing factor to why it generally tends to look so terrible.
I have had some luck discovering murals that were clearly allowed or perhaps even commissioned by the business owners and that is what I will showcase today.
When i was riding past this, it looked a lot better from afar than it did up close. Once you get too close you can see the ares where the colors, particularly on the skin, shift and it isn't always that great of a look. However, just like some of the world's most famous pieces of art, this is intentional as the piece is meant to be viewed from a distance.
This was just the side of a coffeeshop that must not have done very well because it was shut at the time and it was business hours at the time. One problem that they face is that this city, just like really any other city in South East Asia, has like a million coffee shops and it's not exactly easy to differentiate yourselves in that market. They were also in a rather odd part of town where not many people are going to end up anyway. Of course there was construction going on all over the place.
It did seem to be a bit of an industrial area as I noticed many small "factories" or warehouses around, including this one that seemed to be some sort of distribution center for coffee.
At least I think it was coffee - I don't know for certain. I'm pretty sure that coffee doesn't come from trees so maybe this place was selling jackfruit. beats me! I did kind of like this mural though and much like the other one, if ou got too close the image diminished in quality.
I think they really could have done a better job on that face or just the person in general. If you look around the ides of her it looks as though they struggled to not smear the paint for the foliage that is around her and if you get too close it actually seems kind of amateurish - which it almost certainly actually is.
So that's it. I wouldn't call these world class but they were good enough that people haven't messed with them even though both businesses didn't seem to be open at all, on a weekday. I haven't heard much in the way of response from you lately out there fellow art posters. Let's see what your local community has for us!
