I recently attended concerts on back-to-back nights that I feel showcased the dichotomy between new and old electronic music. Often, people who now like electronic music are fully entrenched into one of two camps: house/trance/techno vs dubstep/trap (a simplification for sure). To those who don't enjoy electronic, it is probably just all noise.
The first night I saw Ferry Corsten who is a Dutch trance/progressive house DJ that has been around since the early 90s. He is the type of electronic music that I grew up hearing (Sandstorm by Darude is the quintessential electronic song from my childhood). These days, it is a bit strange to me that trance stands out in my memory as the midwest was the birth of both house and techno (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_music and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techno) but I digress.

Ferry Corsten's show was 21+ at a small club whose average attendee was probably mid 30s. This is in stark contrast to Boombox Cartel's (trap/dubstep) show that was 18+ at a much larger location and the average attendee was probably pretty close to that minimum. The former show was giving away free tickets the day of the show whereas the latter was sold out weeks before the show.

I don't really have any profound conclusions. I really enjoyed both shows but they were extremely different experiences. Clearly there are significantly different levels of popularity these days. Perhaps I am always a bit confused why both camps tend to dislike the other's music. Maybe it is just tribe mentality?
What are your thoughts? Do you like either/both/neither?
