The Yamaha Reface series of keyboards came out two years ago. Several companies were bringing out new affordable analog synths at that time and when Yamaha started a teaser-campaign for a new range of instruments some synth-enthousiasts got their hopes up high.
The reveal was a bit anti-climatic; they were digital instruments with -shock-horror!- mini-keys! And they weren't even that cheap.
Originally they were supposed to be almost 600 euro (if I remember correctly) But the price quickly came down.
Two weeks ago I found that you can now get the Reface CS for less than 300 euro so I decided to try one.
I like to dabble in music, recording on my laptop. Desktop-synths and mini-keys are fine by me. I'm not a pianist!
You have immediate acces to all the parameters and you can make a wide range of sounds quickly. The CS has it's own sound and character; it's a peculiar mix of virtual analog with some FM and a ringmod thrown in. The inbuilt effects are also a nice addition.
There are no presets but you can store patches on an I-pad-app (which is useless to me; I don't have Apple-stuff) or on soundmondo.yamahasynth.com; a site using web-midi.
I tried the latter and had some fun uploading a bunch of patches and trying out what others had come up with. Here's a video showcasing some of my sounds.
