Welcome, steemians! On this occasion I come to share with you something I have learned in my singing school. I'll tell you about the importance of breathing when you sing.
I'm sure you've heard that to sing, you have to do it through the diaphragm. This is absolutely true, but how should we do this without suffering any kind of lesion?
The human being has 3 types of respirations:
1. High Breaths:
This breathing happens when the air fills the upper chest, causing the shoulders and clavicles to ascend.
2. Abdominal Breaths:
This breathing puts the lower part of the thorax and the upper part of the abdomen to work.
3. Rib Breaths:
This breathing happens when the rib cage is expanded (opening the ribs) and the diaphragm is lowered, concentrating the air in the lower, middle, and upper lungs.
But which of these breaths is the most appropriate for singing?
Undoubtedly, it is the rib breaths, because having a wide posture (opening the ribs), the air enters to your body more easily, letting you sing with more security and control.
If you have been told that to sing you must always breathe through your nose, I will tell you that when you do this type of breathing, you will not have to make any effort to do it. Just by expanding the rib cage, your lungs fill with air.
Let's do an experiment! Try to expand your rib cage, keeping your mouth shut and your nose blocked.
What did you feel? A suctioning sensation, right?
That's what happens every time you open your ribs. When you make that movement, your lungs fill with air, without the effort of breathing through your nose.
Advantages of rib breaths:
- Your breathing capacity will increase.
- You'll have better posture.
- You'll get a controlled exhalation.
- You'll feel confident when you sing.
Why aren't the other breaths working for singing?
You should not make the other breaths in the singing because these will cause tension in the cervical muscles, causing lesions. It is important to know that to sing, your body must be kept totally relaxed.
Exercise:
I invite you to do 10 minutes of expansion and contraction of the rib cage, putting your hands on your ribs, in front of the mirror. Then try to sing through this breathing. It is important that while you are doing this, you avoid any tension in your body, such as your neck, shoulders and face.

I share with you a cover I made of the song "Cry Me A River" by Julie London.
I send you a hug! :D ❤
