I was playing around with some sounds
from Spitfire Audio's LABS last night, trying to go through some stuff that I haven't used much, if at all, so I could at least know what it sounds like to incorporate it in the future. I wound up with 7 bar progression that I thought was kind of cool, so I started layering some more sounds on it, and wound up with. It's not a complete song idea by any means, considering it's just 3 tracks, has a very abrupt end (I didn't add a fade out or anything yet, figured this rough version was a good place to start), and definitely needs some serious EQing and the like. But, I like the idea. It uses some instruments that are built from orchestral samples, specifically brass and woodwind instruments, but also have been tweaked in various ways, to create a more interesting timbre, along with an organ. Track 1 is the from the LABS Tape Orchestra set, specifically the 'Brass Loops' instrument. I wrote 3 separate sections, A (in Pink in this track), B (in Blue) and C (in Green), though the C part only happens once at the end. In the A part, we are basically in D dorian, though there are a few Bb's thrown in at some points.
Track 1, A and B Parts
Listen to Digital Brass here....
When we move into the B section, we start entirely in D minor
(just regular old Aeolian, nothing fancy), moving from Bb to C to Dmin, but then a little dissonance as we slide up a halfstep to Eb, then our last 3 bars: Bb, G (major), and Amin6, before returning to the A section. In the C part, we change keys, starting on Dmaj, to Bmin, to G, back to D. We end with a move from Bmin to G to A, taking us back to the A part one more time before everything ends. I figured if I kept going with this idea, I'd add something at the end, a different part entirely for an outro of sorts. Track 2 is another Tape Orchestra instrument, the 'Strings Flautando', which also plays a single note line, mostly harmonizing with Track 1 and helping to build out the chords I mentioned before. However, Track 3 uses one of the LABS Pipe Organ sounds, and fills the chords in completely, along with some other little additions and accents. There is a moment before one of the Bmin chords in the C section where it starts on a C natural, which is just a quick thing, but that little dissonance turned out to be a cool addition. Overall, I like the general vibe here, so I'll spend some time with it and see what it can become.
