Joe Lally - What Makes You
Joe Lally is a bassist/songwriter,
most known for his time in the legendary Fugazi. Unfortunately, his biography online is a bit sparse, so there isn't a whole lot of information I can add here. He started his own record label, Tolotta records, which was active from 1994 to 2001, and has worked on a number of side projects, such as Decahedron, Ataxia (with John Frusciante of RHCP fame), and The Messthetics. Recently, it has been announced that Lally will be going back to work with Ian MacKaye and his wife Amy Farina on a new project called Coriky. A single was released last week, and the full album will come out next month.
Listen to What Makes You by Joe Lally here.
This is the opening track
to Lally's 2011 solo album, Why Should I Get Used to It, which I just discovered recently. It has some similarities to MacKaye's work, particularly in The Evens (which I shared yesterday), in its stripped down, heavily rhythmic vibe. Lally comes at writing from the perspective of a bassist, which is pretty apparent throughout the album; personally, I love it, as he often focuses on very rhythmic ideas, rather than anything more harmonically complex, which creates a sort of hypnotic feeling. If you like this track, I highly reccomend checking out the full album.
