Battles - Leyendecker
I shared a tune from Battles a month
or so ago, but in general, they're a band I haven't shared in these posts that often. I was first introduced to Battles in 2010 or 2011, along with a ton of other bands, when a friend let me borrow a portable hard drive he had, filled with music. There were some awesome math-rock bands, which really got me into that genre, but Battles also stood out to me; they were experimental, but not in a proggy, mathy way, instead focusing on interesting grooves with weird tones and strange guitar/keyboard loops. The band was formed in 2002 in New York City by Ian Williams. For a while, the band was a 4-piece, consisting of Williams, John Stanier, Dave Konopka and Tyondai Braxton, though Braxton would leave after some differences with the other members. After writing and touring as 3-piece, Konopka left in 2018, and the band has continued as a two-piece ever since. They've released 4 full length albums over the years, and a bunch of EPs, along with all sorts of remixes and compilation appearances. Today's song is from the band's first full length, 2007's Mirrored, which was my introduction to the group. The single 'Atlas' got a lot of press, and was even featured in the commercials for the video game Little Big Planet. I love pretty much every track on the album, though this song is a personal favorite. I love the super weird, vibrating high pitched vocals. Besides the drums, it's hard to really pinpoint what instruments are being used, as the guitars and keyboards sound so strange at times.
