Weezer - Blast Off!
Of all of the bands whose music
I am a massive fan of, Weezer is definitely the strangest, in that I LOVE a very small portion of their discography, hate another portion, and am entirely ambivalent about the vast majority of it. Despite this, I still consider them a classic band, who released incredibly influential music that continues to inspire young artists till this day. The group was first formed in 1992 in Los Angeles, CA, with the original line-up consisting of Rivers Cuomo, Jason Cropper, Matt Sharp, and Patrick Wilson, though since 2001, Brian Bell and Scott shriner have been in the band, replacing Jason Cropper and Mikey Walsh (who himself replaced founding member Matt Sharp). The group's debut self titled album, known as The Blue Album had a couple of hits, and brought the group a lot of mainstream attention. The follow-up to that, 1996's Pinkerton, at the time was a bit of a flop, though in the years since has become lauded as (arguably) their best release, and is a personal favorite of mine. The album that followed this, again self titled, known as 'The Green Album', had more huge hits, though personally, from here on, I sort of lose interest, with a few exceptions here and there (like the incredible song 'Death and Destruction' on 2002's Maladroit.
Before Pinkerton became the album
we now all know, it was going to be a rock opera, telling a story about Cuomo's feelings about rock music and success in it, told in the setting of outer space, about the crew of a ship, and their journey across the galaxy. This whole idea was eventually abandoned, with a few random songs from the original incarnation showing up on Pinkerton. Fortunately, these songs have since been released, in various forms, most notably on a Pinkerton Deluxe Edition. Some of the songs are incredibly catchy, and definitely could have been classics, if only they'd been released. This song (I believe) opened the album, and is really everything I love about Weezer in this time period: catchy melodies, awesome lead parts, crunchy, heavy rhythm guitar riffs, and of course, Cuomo's signature vocal style.
