I wanted to do another timed
challenge, but this time only allow myself to use a single piano (specifically the 'soft piano' from Spitfire Audio's LABS), and only five minutes to write something. I don't dislike the results, but I think there are definitely some points that need tweaking, and didn't come out exactly as I was imagining. Five minutes is just such a scramble, even with something simple like this, as I would constantly be hearing little things I wanted to add/edit, but then realizing I was already onto something else, lol.
Listen to Noir Nights here.
The song is all built on a
5 bar pattern in the 'left hand', which can be seen on the left side of the first image below. It begins on Gminor, then moves down to the bVi of Eb for the last two bars. There are two different 'right hand' variations, which you can see below. The first is some big intervals (octaves, 9ths, 10ths) that are relatively sparse, while the second uses an ascending chordal thing. Over the G5 in the bass, the 2nd var. moves from Gmaj to Amaj to Bmaj, which is a nice little change of pace. However, the 3 chord ascending part over the Eb isn't nearly as cool, and is actually a spot I messed up, and didn't have time to revisit.
