Burt Bacharach wrote "Wives and Lovers" in 1963 the year I was born, and today it's a famous jazz standard for many guitar players. In this version, Chuck Corbisiero takes us through the chord progression, embellishes on the melody using a Wes Montgomery octave technique by sliding the octaves, and creates tension by moving chords and arpeggios up a half step and then back down.
You will also notice Chuck using his thumb to strum the chords and the octaves which was also a technique Wes Montgomery was known for because he never used a pick. The fleshy part of the thumb gives the guitar a nice fat sound.
This song is a great example of using chords, arpeggios, octaves, single line melody phrases, jazz motifs, and strumming using the thumb. There are many techniques in this arrangement but for Chuck it's no problem and fun to watch.
