Excuse me. I need to rant a moment. I’m a woman. I’m allowed. Well, in this PC society, perhaps saying I’m a woman is gender racism? WTH, yeah, I’m a girl. I don’t care.
<breathe, Lottie, breathe!>
Cleveland radio station, WDOK, bans classic Christmas song, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside,” due to a complaint saying that it is offensive to the #metoo movement. Other stations are following suit. Here are the lyrics of this 74-year-old song. Look at the words and think about it.
"Baby It's Cold Outside"
(I really can't stay) But, baby, it's cold outside
(I've got to go away) But, baby, it's cold outside
(This evening has been) Been hoping that you'd drop in
(So very nice) I'll hold your hands they're just like ice
(My mother will start to worry) Beautiful, what's your hurry
(My father will be pacing the floor) Listen to the fireplace roar
(So really I'd better scurry) Beautiful, please don't hurry
(Well, maybe just half a drink more) Put some records on while I pour
(The neighbors might think) Baby, it's bad out there
(Say what's in this drink) No cabs to be had out there
(I wish I knew how) Your eyes are like starlight now
(To break this spell) I'll take your hat, your hair looks swell
(I ought to say no, no, no, sir) Mind if I move in closer
(At least I'm gonna say that I tried) What's the sense of hurting my pride
(I really can't stay) Baby, don't hold doubt
[Both] Baby, it's cold outside
(I simply must go) Baby, it's cold outside
(The answer is no) Baby, it's cold outside
(The welcome has been) How lucky that you dropped in
(So nice and warm) Look out the window at the storm
(My sister will be suspicious) Gosh your lips look delicious
(My brother will be there at the door) Waves upon a tropical shore
(My maiden aunt's mind is vicious) Gosh your lips are delicious
(But maybe just a cigarette more) Never such a blizzard before
(I got to get home) But, baby, you'd freeze out there
(Say lend me a coat) It's up to your knees out there
(You've really been grand) I thrill when you touch my hand
(But don't you see) How can you do this thing to me
(There's bound to be talk tomorrow) Think of my life long sorrow
(At least there will be plenty implied) If you caught pneumonia and died
(I really can't stay) Get over that old doubt
[Both] Baby, it's cold
[Both] Baby, it's cold outside
Date rape? Whaaa?! What’s in this drink? She said no a number of times but also makes excuses as to why she isn’t leaving and what she could say to cover her tracks. He is really putting on the pressure for her to stay and stop holding out on him but never says anything out of the way or forceful. At the time, society would have frowned on the girl even being alone with the man, so she blames the drink as to why she is staying, even asking for “maybe just a half a drink more” to stall. She really wants to stay even though she knows her family will freak.
What’s next? Santa should b skinny since he is representing obesity as being OK? Discrimination and bullying are promoted because it’s represented in Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer? What is this generation afraid of? We know the difference between right and wrong. I mean, we do, right? Back in the 40’s when this was written by Frank Loesser we never even acknowledged that married people slept together and they were loving this flirty song!
I must admit this isn’t the first time a song has been banned because someone was offended. There was one ban, for instance, that really raked me and it wasn’t even in this my-feelings-got-hurt time period. In 1973, Conway Twitty had his own controversy with his hit song, “You’ve Never Been This Far Before.” Several radio stations refused to play the song because they said it was about a man taking a girl’s virginity. WHAT? These people didn’t even listen to the song’s lyrics. It was about a man making love to a woman who had never stepped out on her husband before. Yeah, yeah, I know. It was still bad in the sense that it promoted infidelity. He cheated. She cheated. It was a big cheating thing. I don’t promote it, but I love the song. Bite me.
Look. Let’s face reality. If you don’t like gun violence, don’t go to movies like Deathwish or Sicario. If you don’t believe in nudity in art, avoid the museums. Don’t start banning movies like Fast and the Furious just because its about stealing cars or books like Fifty Shades of Grey because of the sadist/masochism.
Just don’t partake in them!
I suppose paintings will be taken down at the Louvre since keeping them up must obviously promote rape and porn. The Bible and Quran will be taken off shelves since not everyone is religious. Suicides are more common during the holidays so are all of the big days next? (rolls eyes). Give me a break. Yes, I know this is going overboard but isn’t this controversy?
Let me know what you think about all of this in the comments below. I wont judge. You have every right to agree or disagree with why there’s a ban. We are all given choices in life and that will never be taken away. Unless someone decides to ban that too….
