Hello friends and family!
Another Birthday and this one is truly special to me.
Well usually it's Wu Wednesday today, but since it's Dilla Month and Dilla's Birthday, we need to celebrate this man instead!
J. Dilla, born James Dewitt Yancey on February 7th, 1974 in Detroit was an extremely popular producer and rapper. He made a name for himself by producing albums for the Pharcyde, Common and A Tribe Called Quest, to only name a few.
Dilla's sampling technique was groundbreaking for this era and still emulated to this day. He was truly ahead of his time.
Yesterday a friend mentioned that his MPC and Moog are going into the Smithsonian. WOW! What a legend!
Donuts is one of the best albums he did, in my opinion. A great example of his unique sampling technique is this short clip here:
Sadly, Dilla passed away too soon due to a lupus related illness in 2006. He even moved his studio into his hospital room to finish Donuts. He was so dedicated to what he did. Especially the track "Don't cry" is like a goodbye to his fans and loved ones. Don't cry. Play my music on and on.
