Hi There 😊
4am!!
A loud sound woke me up. I jumped out of bed and realised it was pouring outside. Lightning and thunder. The works. My first thought was... Noooooo... the laundry!! Even though under a shade, rain this heavy will get to them. I ran to the back and managed to save my laundry in the nick of time. And then I curled back in bed. As I waited for sleep to take over, I started thinking of all the rain songs and we know there are plenty.
The rain has always inspired and so this time around for FourPlay (4 Songs-1Theme) we are doing RAIN... all from the 90's because one of my favouritest(surely they need to include this word in the dictionary already) is the one I'll start with.
Most rain songs are melancholic, depressing and sad. Even when it's meant to be happy, there's the underlying tones like overcoming challenges and dealing with disappointments. Which brings to mind the debate of creativity helping one cope with pain. You find it amongst singers, artists, actors, painters and some argue that the best works come from those who had and still live with their "demons". Sigh... OK, back to FourPlay

No Rain - Blind Melon
Bassist Brad Smith wrote this song even before the band was formed. Inspired by a girl he was dating back then, who would sleep in on sunny days and complain about it not raining. As he performed the song, he realised that it was also about him. This song climbed many charts and Blind Melon is known best for this song. However, there were times they didn't feel like performing the song and would just leave it out. And even then I found several and there are two favourites that I absolutely have to share with you. The first unplugged, the second for SNL

Only Happy When It Rains - Garbage
I don't mean to be moody on a weekend (let's just blame it on the rain... haha) but here is another song that's also about wanting the rain to pour. About the rain making one happy. Happy because it compliments sadness.. Again, a song about depression.

November Rain - Guns n Roses
If the theme is Rain songs from the 90s and I don't include this, shame on me. The longest song ever played on radio. A great toilet break song. Press play, run... actually you can just walk .... and when you get back the song is just getting started. A coffee break would have been possible too if Axl Rose kept to the original length (but it may not have made it to radio). When he first wrote it, it was 25 minutes long. And then it was edited to 8.59"... Still pretty long but oh so good.

Flood - Jars Of Clay
It is a Christian Weekend and this song is from a Contemporary Christian Band and fits in beautifully with my list today. Funnily enough, they are not sure about what inspired the song as they wrote it on a hot sunny day. But many have interpreted it as a song about Noah and The Great Flood. In that year,1996, it was the only song from a Christian Band to make it into the Top 100 Billboard Charts.
