My news feed told me that Tina Turner has passed away. Born Ann Bullock, she met Ike Turner in the late 1950s. Ike was already a locally popular musician and leader of his band The Kings of Rhythm. Ike found out that Ann had a powerful voice and added her to his band as a singer. He also renamed her Tina Turner and the couple got married in 1962. The band became Ike and Tina Turner.
In 1961 they had one of their first hits with a song called It's Gonna Work Out Fine. This song features Mickey and Sylvia, who had a huge hit in 1957 with Love Is Strange. You can hear the similar high reverb guitar sounds that were on that hit, on this song.
Ten years after, in 1971 they had a hit that brought them worldwide fame. They did a cover of Credence Clearwater Revival's hit Proud Mary. On the record it starts out slow, but then Tina says "we never ever do nothing nice and easy" and they amp up the speed and intensity for the rest of the song. Here's a clip of Ike and Tina Turner on the Ed Sullivan Show in '70 or '71 doing Proud Mary. Dance with them!
In 1975 Tina Turner played The Acid Queen in the movie of Who's rock opera Tommy. You may remember that Tommy was the "deaf, dumb and blind kid" who somehow was able to be a wizard at Pinball. The Acid Queen was called in to provide his first LSD fueled sexual experience. "Give us a room, close the door, leave us for a while. You won't be a boy no more, young but not a child!" Here's the clip from the movie Tommy. The song is Rock with a typical mid 70s vibe.
May Tina Turner Rest In Peace. Her music lives on forever.
